Note on delivery arrangements: Zimele is a Zulu word that means ‘to stand on your own feet’ which captures the spirit of the organisation. Through self-help groups (SHGs), rural South African women receive training and are encouraged to start weekly savings to meet family needs and to develop their business ideas. Most of us are aware of the poverty and HIV/ AIDS pandemic faced by African countries, and the affect on children and communities, but don’t know how to help. It’s tempting to jump in and ask, “How can I fix this?” This saviour-mentality may be quicker, but it can create dependency. Zimele chooses a different route. One that seeks to develop people first, then mentor them as they come-up with their own ideas to better their community. Zimele UK provides funds and administrative support to the project in South Africa
Note on delivery arrangements: HANDS AROUND THE WORLD seeks to help vulnerable children around the world, encouraging enthusiastic and well-prepared volunteers to offer practical help, skill-sharing, support and friendship.
